Mr. Monopoly Goes To Kansas City
Last Monday, it was announced that Hasbro would be releasing an official Kansas City edition of the popular Monopoly boardgame later this fall. With the company taking suggestions from Kansas Citians, I decided to design my own gameboard. And let me tell you, with so many great neighborhoods and landmarks (and so few spaces!), it was much tougher than I could have imagined.
KCRW 2022 In Review
Every year, Kansas City Restaurant Week (KCRW) creates a golden opportunity for Kansas Citians to try new restaurants and visit familiar favorites and get unbelievable deals on multi-course meals. As a #FountainCityFoodie, KCRW has long been a vehicle for me to try new restaurants or to eat at places that may be otherwise out of my budget. This year, I took advantage of the incredible specials that are the $15 lunches and these were my experiences.
A Model of Consistency
The owner of Harold’s Drive-In, Deb Walker, is very steadfast in her belief that, “Consistency is what keeps places open.” She would know. For over 60 years, Harold’s Drive-In in Columbus Park has been delighting the people of Kansas City with their quick-serve, but made-to-order, sandwiches, sides, and shakes.
FCS: Best of 2021
As the year comes to a close, I award my Fountain City Superlatives for the 2021 year. As a deviation from what many publications do, these superlatives are much more personal. They are not necessarily the best in KC - they are just the best new experiences I had in KC in 2021. As always, there’s no voters - it’s just me.
Devan’s Dozen: Christmas Edition
In 2018, the Consumer Price Index estimated the total cost of the gifts given in the famed carol The 12 Days of Christmas to be valued at just north of $39,000. The value is clearly there but were the gifts any good? This special Christmas edition of Devan’s Dozen ranks, from worst to first, the gifts of this beloved song.
Crying For Ol’ Buck
I will never forget where I was on December 5, 2021 when the seemingly impossible happened - legendary Kansas City Monarchs first baseman and manager Buck O’Neil was inducted into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame. And even though, he always told his fans not to cry for him - how could I not?
Close to Home
About 100 miles north of Kansas City lies the seemingly sleepy town of Skidmore, Missouri. Over the past half-century, Skidmore has become notable for the occasional violent and mysterious incidents that have transpired there. Growing up in nearby Worth County, Kansas City filmmaker Clayton Scott has long been intrigued by Skidmore’s grisly past. Real-life crimes in Skidmore were the influence behind his most recent film, “Below the Fold”.
A Walk In The Parks, Pt. III
At long last, the tale of my summer travels with my brother Connor comes to an end. We concluded our trip at Yellowstone National Park. While it has long been THE national park and we were excited to visit, you can never quite prepare for the oddity and geology of Yellowstone. It truly is a bizarre place.
#kc2026
Today, nearly two dozen delegates from FIFA are conducting their site visit of Kansas City culminating in attending the US Women’s National Team vs. Korea at Children’s Mercy Park. This city, and our amazing #kc2026 bid committee, have worked tirelessly to get us to this point. But now, in the homestretch, we need our most valuable resource and the thing that makes the Soccer Capital of America so special - our people.
