Devan’s Dozen: Icon Edition
In an age where we quickly label everything “iconic”, few things actually are. True icons carry nostalgia that spans generations. While Kansas City’s barbeque gets much of the spotlight, there are many original foods that have helped shape the city. These are the KC dishes that have endured to become the city’s most iconic eats.
From Kansas City with Love
Kansas City is having a moment, but so are 15 other cities. And I’ve visited 13 of them. For those who plan to chase this tournament elsewhere, this is a Kansas Citian’s guide to the 2026 FIFA World Cup host cities. From iconic eats and drinks to hidden gems to legendary landmarks, these are 26 food & travel recs for the 26 World Cup, across the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Godspeed!
FCS: Best of 2025
“The thing all writers do best,” Alan Dean Foster once wrote, “is find ways to avoid writing.” At the last minute, the Fountain City Superlatives for 2025 are finally here. As I look back on the year that was, and ahead to the year that will be, it is important to remember that this yearly feature is about recognizing places that are NEW TO ME. The places listed are not necessarily brand new or the very best in KC for their given category. Instead, they were just the best thing I tried in 2025 that I had not tried prior.
Devan’s Dozen: BPT Edition
There are many places that can lay claim to the breaded pork tenderloin (BPT for short). Of course there’s Indiana where it was invented, Iowa and Illinois where it grew up, or even up the river in St. Joseph, Missouri where they gave the sandwich its own revolutionary twist. While Kansas City doesn’t have the history of those places, we still have some great BPTs. These are the best pork tenderloins in the metro.
FCS: Best of 2024
No matter how aware I am of it, this exact article sneaking up on me is becoming a bit of an annual tradition. I am always thankful for this time to reflect on the year that was. So as I recount the “Best of 2024”, and the “Biggest Loss” of the year, it is important to remember that the places named within were not necessarily the very best in KC of a given category or that they were brand new, they were just the best of things that were brand new to me. That distinction is always important.
Head for the Hill
A few years ago, when I proposed a Monopoly board layout for KC and included Strawberry Hill, a friend asked, “What’s a Strawberry Hill”. This vibrant Slavic and Latin American community in KCK has a rich history and is full of fantastic spots but even those who may have been to one or two spots have never dug in. Hopefully this highlight reel of Strawberry Hill favorites changes that.
Manhattan Knight
As Grand Boulevard re-opens after another successful Big XII Basketball Tournament, I think back on my first year as a fan of a Big XII school. As a passionate UCF fan, the addition of the Knights to the conference gave me a number of opportunities to support my team this year, including a memorable day in Manhattan, Kansas. These were some of the highlights.
KCRW 2024 in Review
Every year, Kansas City Restaurant Week (KCRW) creates a golden opportunity for Kansas Citians to try new restaurants and visit familiar favorites, and enjoy unbelievable deals on multi-course meals. Despite the weather and a busy schedule, I found a way to enjoy KCRW as I do every year. And while I enjoyed three fantastic meals, I found myself asking, “Is KC Restaurant Week really the unbelievable deal it once was?” This was my experience.
The KC “BBQ Bible” (MO)
Setting out to try every single Kansas City barbeque spot, it can be easy to know where you start, but where does one finish? There’s no set checklist of every BBQ joint in the metro. There’s no order guide of what you must, and mustn’t get! That is, there wasn’t. As I recorded my own decade-long pilgrimage through the Q Capital, one friend joked this was a “BBQ Bible”. Not only did I confirm it, I got a little carried away with the concept.
Part 1 / 2 explores the 9 Missouri counties that comprise KC.
