Devan’s (Double) Dozen: Burger Edition

The Best of Cowtown’s Bounty of Brilliant Burgers

Published May 1, 2025

The chicken? Or the egg?

It’s the type of timeless riddle that can drive the sanest person mad. But, when it comes to disKCovery and Devan’s Dozen, there’s no such debate. Devan’s Dozen absolutely came first!

While I had never bothered to write them down, organize them in any official way, and rarely spoke of them - long before I knew what to call them - I always had my lists. In the farthest reaches of my mind, only known to me, were a record of Kansas City’s best-kept secrets. I had not set out to find the city’s best burger. But, somewhere along my half-baked (half-smoked?) quest to indulge in every brand of barbeque this town had to offer, I realized I had taken quite a large, and literal, bite out of this city’s burger scene too.

So, about eight years ago, when I sat down on a spring day, much like this one, and penned my first edition of Devan’s Dozen ^ on Facebook Notes (remember those?), it wasn’t about ribs, pulled pork, or even burnt ends. It was all about burgers; greasy, gooey, grandiose, glorious burgers!

When I crave a burger, nothing else will do. Unlike J. Wellington Wimpy, I’ll pay for my burger first. No IOUs desperately scrawled on a napkin. No promises for a tomorrow that may never come. Cash or card in hand, upfront, because when that symphony of beef, fat, and cheese hits my nostrils, there is no room for negotiation. Only a sacred exchange of currency for beef-induced salvation.

From the caramelized, paper-thin smashburger on a pillowy bun to its diminutive slider cousin, from the towering elegance of a carefully-constructed pub burger to the richness of a prime-cut steakburger to a quarter-pound classic - either shoved on a bun and wrapped in wax paper, or melted between two slices of rye in a patty melt-shaped slice of paradise - I love burgers of every size, shape, and creed.

This is no mere sandwich of grilled meat and toasted bread ... This is God, speaking to us in food.
— Marshall Eriksen, "How I Met Your Mother"

In the years since I compiled that first list, my love for burgers has never waned. The list of Kansas City burgers conquered has only grown longer, leaving a trail of crumpled foil, mustard packets, and cholesterol-laden euphoria. I don’t even think I can call it love anymore. It’s an obsession, draped in a blanket of American cheese, grilled onions, and unrepentant depravity. So, when 2025 arrived, I just knew it was time to go back. Back to the scene of my original crime, into a whirlwind of beautiful, beef-patty chaos.

I hit the road like a man possessed. Every diner, drive-in, dive bar, food truck, and refined eatery in the metro worth visting; every spot on the original list, and many more contenders off of it, was a target in a pursuit that was no longer organic, and had evolved into full-blown, intentional, burger madness.

You won’t find any Whoppers here. No Shack Stacks. No ButterBurgers. No corporate, sterile, copy-paste combos that extend across this country in a fit of capitalistic manifest destiny. Those burgers have their place.

It’s at 2:00am in a Westport parking lot, when you’re a couple drinks too deep to care.

It’s in the nostalgia of a beloved family memory, paired with a toy, destined to break before your next recess.

It’s at lunchtime, when the weight of the work week only allows twenty stolen minutes for a numbered meal that comes in a wrapper.

But, not here.

This is a tribute to the artisans of Kansas City’s burger scene. This is an ode to the rubber ketchup bottles, sizzling griddles, and grease-stained bags; to the daily clang of spatulas, handfuls of pickles, and flame-kissed grills across the city that, one patty at a time, makes us worthy of the name Cowtown.

I set out to present a list that reflects the landscape as it exists today; an inventory of the city’s best burgers based on taste, quality, and value for the price. So this year, I doubled down; LITERALLY. For the second year in a row, I present, not just a Devan’s Dozen, but a double dozen. 24 burger spots. 24 glorious, grease-shined examples (out of the dozens this city has to offer) of the signature sandwich of our bovine namesake.

STYLE: Smashburger

Burgers have always been the ultimate working-class food; born out of necessity, practicality, and affordability. At its core, it’s a patty of beef, bun, maybe a slice of cheese or some veggies. No frills. Just food. That goes double for the smashburger, a sandwich that wears its grit like a badge of honor. But at Lenexa’s upscale cocktail bar Verdigris, this blue collar classic gets the white glove treatment. Foil wrapper makes way for a ceramic plate. The handful of paper napkins is usurped by a linen one, with [GASP!] silverware rolled up within. The bluntly named “Cheeseburger” features two lacy-edged smash patties topped with melted slices of pungent Wisconsin brick cheese, caramelized onions, house-brined pickles with an idyllic snap, and a slather of dijonnaise, carefully tucked into a toasted, spongy brioche bun. Refined, but still rugged, you can taste the griddle. It’s a reminder that a working-class hero can pull off a fitted suit when it wants to.

Pro Tip: Go during Happy Hour! Sometimes they offer specials on their burger, but it’s always the best time to try one of their expertly crafted cocktails.

23. Fric & Frac - Est. 1976
1700 W. 39th Street, Kansas City, Missouri | $$$$

STYLE: Classic Burger

West 39th has reinvented itself more times than you can count, but Fric & Frac has been a constant; a stubborn, neon-lit North Star that has greeted generations of Kansas Citians from X to Z. Long before the neighborhood was trendy, this Westport staple was doing its own thing. One part neighborhood watering hole, one part diner, this corner bar behind the lemon yellow neon glow has been flipping burgers and pouring pints for nearly 50 years. Stainless steel stools with black cushions cling to the bar like loyal regulars. Tacky floral tablecloths from a bygone era drape the tables. As for the burgers? They’re unfussy, scratch-made, split in half, and served with a Jolly Rancher candy on the side (because of course they are). There are enough specialty options to eat a different burger every meal for a week without repeating, and not a single one feels like a gimmick. Fric & Frac has never chased the hype. They’ve never had to. They keep winning over customers the old-fashioned way: one burger, one basket of Suzy Qs, one cold beer, and one Jolly Rancher at a time.

The Fountain City Foodie’s Go-To Order? Bacon Burger with Blue Cheese, a side of Suzy Q’s, and a Pint (and hope for a grape Jolly Rancher!)

Pro Tip: Stop in with a friend on a Monday when the burgers are Buy One, Get One (and split an order of Suzy Qs)!

22. Knub’s Pub - Est. 2015
5386 Roberts Street, Shawnee, Kansas | $$$$

Brother Burger with Onion Rings from Knub’s Pub (Shawnee, KS) | PHOTO CREDIT - disKCovery

STYLE: Pub Burger

Referring to Knub’s Pub as a sports bar is like labeling a chimera a lion. Sure, it’s technically true, but it hardly captures the entire beast. Hidden behind an unassuming strip mall facade is a place that blends family, restaurant, arcade, bar, and eclectic attic into a charmingly bizarre eatery. The bar is lit by the type of table lamps your grandmother probably had; only here, they’re suspended upside down from the ceiling. The walls are covered in so many license plates that you can easily win the 50 states game before your menu even hits the table. Pinball machines along one wall and flags of all the local teams hanging from the ceiling only add to the overload. Just like the décor, the burgers are over-the-top. The half-pound patties, sourced from farms in nearby DeSoto, are a canvas for unhinged creativity. Smoky-sweet bacon crystals, grilled pineapple, house chili, seasoned cream cheese, and even peanut butter, are all in play. Whatever you order, you’re going to have a burger as warm, weird, and wonderful as the place that serves it.

The Fountain City Foodie’s Go-To Order? Fatty Patty (substitute Smoked Gouda) with Homemade Onion Rings and a Pint.

Pro Tip: Knub’s Pub’s most sought-after dish may be their house onion rings. The dense, almost hushpuppy flavored rings are unlike any other in the metro; and always worth the upgrade.

STYLE: Pub Burger

On the ground floor of the historic Livestock Exchange, Kansas City’s oldest steakhouse, Golden Ox, stands as a monument to our Cowtown heritage. This birthplace of the Kansas City strip is also home to one of the city’s most formidable burgers. The Ox Half Pound Burger is a beefy behemoth, an elevated homage to the classic bacon cheeseburger. A half pound of grilled, succulent beef rests atop two perfectly positioned strips of house-cured bacon. Zesty burger sauce, buttery bibb lettuce, fresh tomato, and melted cheddar are all stacked on a dense, but airy, house-baked brioche bun to complete the towering ensemble. With a price tag as hefty as the sandwich itself, the pedigree not only justifies the cost; it dares you to question it.

Pro Tip: If you plan to go for dinner, be sure to make a reservation! If you are able to walk in and get a spot, consider grabbing a seat at the kitchen bar where you can watch all the cooking action.

20. Lew’s Grill & Bar - Est. 2004
7539 Wornall Road, Kansas City, Missouri | $$$$

Country Breakfast with Fries at Lew’s Grill & Bar (Kansas City, MO) | PHOTO CREDIT - disKCovery

STYLE: Classic Burger / Smashburger

Sitting in the heart of Waldo, Lew’s Grill & Bar is the epitome of a neighborhood sports bar. Whether you’re a regular bar fly, or a first time visitor, there’s an essence of comfort and familiarity that greets you the second you walk in. Lew’s has something for everyone, and their burgers are no exception. The Classic Lew (single), Big Lew (double), and Bubba Lew (triple) deliver the goods with lettuce, tomato, grilled onion, and sharp cheddar stacked as high as you’d like on a split-top brioche bun. For the more adventurous, an eclectic lineup of specialty burgers is standing at attention, awaiting your order. The KC Smokehouse shoves the signature Lew’s beef patty, along with BBQ sauce, bacon, and crunchy fried onions between two golden slices of Texas toast. The Country Breakfast tries to be everything, every meal, all at once: beef patty, fried egg, bacon, sriracha aioli, and grape jelly, sandwiched between two chewy halves of an everything bagel. And if you’re a smashburger enthusiast, Lew’s got your back. Griddled patties, grilled onions, and melted American on a spongy potato roll are all too ready to scratch that itch. Lew’s doesn’t just serve burgers. It’s a Choose Your Own Adventure that no matter how it begins almost always ends in a food coma.

Pro Tip: If you’re looking to head to Lew’s, go on a Monday, when you can get $2 off craft drafts and $4 off select burgers!

19. Pigwich - Est. 2013

STYLE: Steakburger

When Local Pig made the move from the East Bottoms to the City Market in 2019, it felt like a coronation.  One of the city’s premier meat markets joining the ranks of Kansas City’s most historic marketplace?  That wasn’t just a good fit - it was destiny.  The shop prides itself on sourcing hormone-free meats from small, local farms, and that commitment to quality extends beyond the butcher counter.  It spills over into Pigwich, their next-door eatery.  As the name suggests, this is a haven for sandwiches of all kinds; burgers are very much included.  Whether you build-your-own, go with a more classic option, or have a go at one of the more inventive specialty options, every burger follows a simple, but beautiful, formula. Smash-style third-pound patties of locally sourced beef, toasted Roma onion rolls, and top-tier ingredients deliver a sandwich that you love in the moment, and remember for much longer.

The Fountain City Foodie’s Go-To Order? East Bottoms Burger with Fresh Fried Chips

Pro Tip: There’s few combos as satisfying as a burger and fries, but you can get fries almost anywhere. Spend half as much and go for the crispy, well-seasoned house-made Pigwich chips!

18. Cosmo Burger* (at Dodson’s) - Est. 2020
7438 Wornall Road, Kansas City, Missouri | $$$$

STYLE: Smashburger

Crispy, salty, asymmetrical, and impenitently greasy; the smashburger was never meant to be well-manicured or win any beauty pageants. It’s not here to impress your Instagram following. It’s intended to be good. The Cosmo Burger fully embraces this philosophy, reveling in its imperfections with an air of confidence befitting a burger this profound. Available as a single, double, or triple, what you order is less about your appetite and more about self-prescribing the dosage of joy you wish to feel. Bold sheets of griddle-seared beef are crusty on the edges but juicy in the middle. They’re perfectly seasoned without suffocating the flavor of the meat. Crystals of grilled onion and slices of house-brined pickle pop with flavor; the crunch punctuating each bite like the crash of an orchestra’s cymbals. A molten mass of American cheese fuses this marvelous mess together inside a sweet, doughy potato roll: the only logical vehicle for a burger such as this. Since Cosmo Burger burst on to the scene in 2020, it’s name has been a resounding gong in the local burger conversation. Take a bite and you’ll understand why.

The Fountain City Foodie’s Go-To Order? Double Cheese with Tots, a side of burger sauce, and a Pint

Pro Tip: To the uninitiated, placing an order at Dodson’s can be a bit frustrating. It would seem logical to walk up to the order window and tell them what you’d like, but you would be wrong. The best way to view the menu, and only way to order, is to whip out your smartphone and visit their website. Once your order has been placed and is ready for you, they will call your name. Then, and only then, is it appropriate to head for the Cosmo Burger window.

17. The Russell Restaurant & Catering Company - Est. 2018
3141 Main Street, Kansas City, Missouri | $$$$

STYLE: Pub Burger

A true sandwich connoisseur approaches every burger with a uniform strategy. Like the grand finale of a fireworks show, they pace every bite to ensure the last one hits every note: meat, cheese, toppings, condiments, and bun. At The Russell Restaurant & Catering Company, that level of planning is unnecessary. Their burgers are crafted with such symmetry that every single bite is worthy of being the last. It starts with the bun: a buttery, yielding brioche roll slicked with a layer of creamy truffle aioli. Next, a thick, juicy, nearly crystalized patty of ground brisket, crowned with half-melted gouda, a layer of balsamic caramelized onions, and a handful of leafy arugula. This stanza of meat and cheese is pure poetry, a melody of sweet acidity, umami richness, and a soft crunch of greens. It’s decadent without being excessive. Each bite is predictable and uniform without being boring. At The Russell, each dish is more than a meal; they’re compositions that stick the landing with every bite.

The Fountain City Foodie’s Go-To Order? The Russell Burger, cooked medium well, with Fried Fingerling Potatoes and an Arnold Palmer

Pro Tip: A bag of chips comes standard with the burgers but pay the upcharge to upgrade to either the side salad or the fried fingerling potatoes, and thank me later.

16. Helen’s JAD Bar & Grill
2002 Armour Road, North Kansas City, Missouri | $$$$

Patty Melt with Seasoned Fresh Cut Fries from Helen’s JAD (North Kansas City, MO) | PHOTO CREDIT - disKCovery

STYLE: Classic Burger

Helen’s JAD Bar & Grill wants you to believe it’s “just another dive”. At first glance, that tracks. Dim lighting, drop-tile ceilings, a hodgepodge of mismatched tables and chairs, and a drink rail that might actually date back to the Cleveland administration sell the schtick. The walls and ceilings are papered with three generations of beer ads, and behind the bar, an eye-popping display of 360 Vodka bottles rivals the technicolor brilliance of Joseph’s dreamcoat. Rough edges? Absolutely. But, it’s also cozy and welcoming. The type of place where it feels like everyone knows your name, but nobody actually does. A closer look reveals a little more. Over two dozen taps, fantastic wings, appetizing tavern pizza, hand-cut seasoned fries, and burgers worth every written word. Even if I concede Helen’s claim of being “just another dive”, I refuse to call this just another burger. Medium well quarter-pound patties, half a dozen specialty topping combos, all stuffed between a split-top brioche bun. The Patty Melt (Swiss cheese, roasted peppers, grilled onions, and buttery griddled sourdough) is a gooey masterpiece. This sensational sandwich alone makes Helen’s a destination, but really it’s one of many reasons to find yourself on Armour Road with a few empty pint glasses, a handful of greasy napkins, and zero regrets.

The Fountain City Foodie’s Go-To Order? Patty Melt (substitute pepperjack) with Seasoned Fries and a Pint.

Pro Tip: If you’re waiting on a server to take your order, you’re out of luck. There’s a menu posted at the end of the bar where you should walk up and place your order.

15. Danny’s Burger Shack - Est. 2022
8002 N. Oak Trafficway #107, Kansas City, Missouri | $$$$

Double Sweet Heat with Rings and DBS Sauce from Danny’s Burger Shack (Kansas City, MO) | PHOTO CREDIT - disKCovery

STYLE: Smashburger

Only in name is Danny’s Burger Shack a shack; it’s never been one.  Maybe the “shack” was more of a dream, a concept that harkened back to a golden age of roadside stands and 10-cent burgers.  But the Kidwell family’s stand was robin’s egg blue, had four wheels, and hit the road hard, making the journey from North Bend, Oregon to Kansas City.  Once it landed here, the truck evolved into a storefront in a Northland strip mall, but the spirit of that shack, and a commitment to making a great burger with a side of hand-dipped onion rings, remained the same.  And that is what any diner at Danny’s can expect - a real fine burger. The juicy patties of Black Angus chuck are devoid of frills, but burst with beefy essence.  The toppings? A delightful, flavorful mess. The cloud-like Roma buns soak up every bit of grease, melted cheese and sauce to deliver a sandwich as unapologetic as the Oregon truck that first dared to call itself a shack.

The Fountain City Foodie’s Go-To Order? Double Sweet Heat with Onion Rings and a side of DBS Sauce

Pro Tip: Go on a Tuesday, when Danny’s offers select single cheeseburgers with fries and a 24 ounce soft drink for only $10! They even allow you to double up the patties for only $3 more.

14. Char Bar* - Est. 2014
4050 Pennsylvania Avenue, Kansas City, Missouri | $$$$

CBGB Burger w/ Fried Egg with Spicy Purple Slaw and Sweet Potato Fries from Char Bar (Kansas City, MO) | PHOTO CREDIT - disKCovery

STYLE: Pub Burger

For the most loyal disKCovery readers, this pick comes as no surprise. Char Bar , once again, finds itself on the list. Not out of habit, or laziness, but because this well-rounded foodie destination refuses to be ignored. Like the Washington State flag on College Gameday, it just keeps showing up. At this point, it’s hard to imagine a Devan’s Dozen without them. When it comes to burgers, Char Bar only has a singular entry on their entire menu. But if one pitch can carry Mariano Rivera to the Hall of Fame, then the CBGB Burger is more than enough to earn Char Bar’s spot on this list. A smoked and seared patty of ground brisket is buried under a barrage of crispy, smoked bacon, sweet caramelized onions, and an indulgent smear of gouda divine enough to have the kitchen redeclared a holy site. It all gets stuffed into a toasty, fluffy egg bun with a swipe of Duke’s Mayo. You may call the repeated inclusion of Char Bar overexposure, or even an obsession, but the truth is that they are just the best kind of repeat offender.

The Fountain City Foodie’s Go-To Order? An appetizer of Cheesy Hushpuppies ALWAYS! Then, a CBGB Burger with Fried Egg added, a side of Sweet Potato Fries, and a Pint.

Pro Tip: If you have two dollars to rub together, consider handing them over to Char Bar to add a fried egg to the CBGB. The runny yolk, soaked into the top bun and dripping on to all that lies beneath, really ties this sandwich together and gives it a certain je ne sais quoi.

13. Bizz & Weezy Confections - Est. 2015
1800 Baltimore Avenue, Kansas City, Missouri | $$$$

The Weezy with Tots from Bizz & Weezy (Kansas City, MO) | PHOTO CREDIT - disKCovery

STYLE: Smashburger

Somehow, Bizz & Weezy Confections manages to be half coffee shop, half candy store, half bakery, and half café. While that math doesn’t exactly add up, visitors often arrive at the same conclusion: Bizz & Weezy doesn’t do anything halfway. A confectionary playfully named for the owners’ World of Warcraft avatars, their ever-popular chocolates are expectedly whimsical. While lesser known, the same can be said for their namesake burgers. The Weezy is the most popular of their burger offerings, featuring a crispy smash patty tucked under a blanket of griddled cheese and candied bacon, paired with a cilantro lime aioli on a toasted bun. A multitude of textures and flavors are present, but they do not overwhelm. Instead, like a master pianist, the Weezy knows precisely when, and how hard, to strike each note. By comparison, The BIZZ appears minimalist: nothing more than a beef patty, lettuce, and tomato on that same egg bun. However, like an iceberg, its true depth lies beneath. The patty, coated in ground cocoa and espresso, possesses an earthy complexity that works both with and against the citrusy embrace of the ginger aioli, all while ensuring its the beef that shines. Who can take a burger? Ginger aioli too? Cover it in cocoa, and a miracle or two? The candy man can.

The Fountain City Foodie’s Go-To Order? The Weezy Combo with Tots, Chocolate Chip Cookie, and a Lemonade

Pro Tip: So far this year, Bizz & Weezy has been running a $4.99 burger special! A combo with a side, warm chocolate chip cookie, and a drink still keeps the price tag under $12. Take advantage of this deal while you can!

At this point, I am salivating, and I’m sure you are too. But before we descend any deeper, a break is necessary. Twelve burger joints down. National Burger Month properly kicked off. A dozen more to come. This descent into burger bliss must, for now, be put on pause.

There’s nothing in the world that can compare,
With a hamburger, juicy and rare.
A hamburger lives for the pleasure it gives,
It’s a thrill on the bill of fare.
Such heavenly food deserves the best,
A home and contentment beneath my vest.
There’s nothing in the world that’s so divine,
As a hamburger, tender and fine.
I adore you, hamburger, mine!
— J. Wellington Wimpy, "Hamburger Mine" (1936)

Surely, you have questions. Maybe you’re confused. Perhaps you’re angry. Maybe your favorite spot made the list, but you’re seething because it’s way too low. Let me remind you, just making this list is the highest of honors. It’s like being drafted in the second round instead of the first. This is the 85th percentile of Kansas City’s burger scene. There are many more delicious burgers that didn’t make the cut than there are those that did.

If your favorite burger isn’t here, well, tough luck. You’ve got no choice but to suspend judgment. After all, your beloved burger might’ve made the coveted Devan’s Dozen, or, it could’ve been banished to the abyss of unranked Kansas City burgers.

Now as you spin in that typhoon of questions and emotions, you’re thinking one thing: Do you take a little pleasure in keeping us on the edge of our seats? And the answer is no, no I don’t take a little pleasure in it. I delight quite a bit in it!

The impending rankings are mysterious and important. They’re fueled by a singular pursuit of double-stacked truth between two buns. But rest assured, I won’t leave you hanging here for three years like some other, far more critically-acclaimed cliffhangers. Only a few weeks remain until you know Kansas City’s top 12.

Until then, don’t fret. There’s plenty here to help you relapse into your own meat-fueled madness. Smashburger? Pub burger? Patty melt? Pick your poison. Don’t bother dreaming of great burgers.

They’re out there, within arm’s reach, and waiting for you.

Those Pesky Endnotes

^ Why “Devan’s Dozen”? Well first of all, the traditional top ten is just way too overplayed. I would rather take a number and make it my own. While the “Devan Eleven” nearly happened (and the predictable knock-off logo to go with it), a dozen felt right for a couple other reasons (beyond being able to highlight a couple more places than a top ten). One of those reasons was I am a sucker for alliteration. Having an alliterative name tends to have that effect. That’s also why the subtitle of every Devan’s Dozen piece tries its darndest to be similarly alliterative. Seriously, GO TAKE A LOOK, I’ll wait. Finally, there’s a beauty to the number 12 I cannot explain. It shows up again and again throughout history in a number of significant ways. It’s perfectly divisible by 2, 3, 4, and 6. But most of all, it’s the number of months in the calendar year. The ultimate benefit of a dozen, I remember thinking, is that it permits each list to be thought of as an annual challenge. If you visit one Devan’s Dozen place per month - by the end of the year, you’ll have conquered them all. Now I am not saying that is what you need to do, or should do, but I am definitely not, not saying that either. ;) CLICK HERE TO CONTINUE READING
